Bangladesh,

Where a foreign tourist is still a novelty

Bangladesh - Sundarbans Mangrove forest

 Bangladesh's Sundarban Mangrove forest,
The official comments on the Subarbans

The Sundarban Forest is a diverse and complex ecosystem, influenced by fresh-water inflow, proximity to the Bay of Bengal and human activities.
The Sundarbans mangrove

"The Sundarbans mangrove forest, one of the largest such forests in the world (140,000 ha), lies on the delta of the Ganges, Brahmaputra and Meghna rivers on the Bay of Bengal. It is adjacent to the border of India’s Sundarbans World Heritage site inscribed in 1987. The site is intersected by a complex network of tidal waterways, mudflats and small islands of salt-tolerant mangrove forests, and presents an excellent example of ongoing ecological processes. The area is known for its wide range of fauna, including 260 bird species, the Bengal tiger and other threatened species such as the estuarine crocodile and the Indian python."

Nick's version of the Sundarbans

Awsome, experience, cruised on a great little boat with 8 cabins, quiet mornings being rowed up the tidal creeks looking for wild life, fresh fish, saw Dolphins, crocodiles, monkeys, wild boar, deer, monitor lizards, untold numbers of exotic birds. Missed the bengal tigers by two weeks.

This is a bucket list experience

Bangladesh - Off the beaten path

Bangladesh, a country of over 160 million people, located between Eastern India and Myanmar (formally Burma). Although one of the worlds poorer nations, Bangladesh has a vast wealth of happy cheerful people, as curious about the foreign visitors that come to see their country as the visitors are about them.

This was my second visit in less than a year, A small group of us traveled to Bangladesh in Mid January,  in the middle of Bangladesh's winter, a perfect time to visit, early in the dry season, with day and evening temperatures similar to May in Toronto, mid 20's in the day time and mid teens in the evening.

The objective of this visit was two fold, one to see and experience Bangladesh,  and secondly to visit some of the Schools operated by Amarok Society.

Each member of the group, made a donation as part of their fare, to Amarok Society, the the goal was to raise sufficient funds, for  Amarok Society to run a school for a year.

Amarok Society is a Canadian charity created by Dr. Tanyss and Gem Munro to a specific and  ambitious purpose: "to go into the the worlds most forbidding urban slums to teach mothers to teach both girls and boys who are too poor for school, as a  means to ease the terrible suffering of the poor."

"If you teach a mother, you teach a family; if you teach 5 mothers, you teach a neighbourhood"

www.amaroksociety.org

We visited a number of Amarok Society's schools in Dhaka and Khulna, met with the menbers of the Rotary Club of Dhaka West and the Rotary Club of Dhaka Midtown, toured Dhaka, Khulna, cruised in the Sundarbans mangrove forest, stayed in the Hillside Resort in the Bandarban hill tribes region.

Experienced travel in many modes, including Planes, Trains, Automobiles, Rickshaws, CNG's, Boats, buses and long tailed canoes.

Some of these experiences will be discussed in subsequent postings

Many of Amarok Society's schools are supported by Rotary Clubs, from around the world, including those from Canada, the USA and Bangladesh.
